The ‘Active Travel Link’ project between Saundersfoot Railway Station and Valley Road continues, with works programmed to be completed by the end of May/June.
The link along Station Road will have the final uncontrolled MUR crossing constructed, enabling connectivity to the MUR path that is within the remodelled junction.
All clearance works have been completed on Fan Road/Station Road junction, with the temporary road surface installed during a recent road closure.
“I have had complaints regarding pot holes and sunken drains on Fan Road, and when the road was shut recently, there were extensive repairs on the left hand side heading to The Ridgeway,” said county councillor for the seaside village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams.
“Other works were programmed and completed included verge reshaping works and edge of carriageway reconstruction.
“Works to the junction area currently are focused on fencing and landscaping with trees and native species, alongside minor drainage works and the installation of the uncontrolled crossing noted previously.”
A further road closure for Fan Road is due to commence on the week of May 13 to oversee the installation of a ’priority system’ to form a traffic calming feature and to reassign carriageway space.
The status of the central Fan Road work, near the pond, has advanced to allow for the new path final construction.
The subsequent fencing and path construction works will be completed alongside the final connecting section of MUR, which links to the substantially completed works at Bonville’s Court.
These works are programmed for completion in June when the link will be operational.
“Other Active Travel project works within the village are being considered,” continued Cllr Williams.
“These are all part of a strategic corridor which will eventually provide a network of MUR facilities between Tenby, Penally and to the west Saundersfoot, Wisemans Bridge linking into existing National Cycle Network facilities.
“Feasibility works from the village centre to Stammers Road and along Sandy Hill Road are being developed.
“These proposals will be shared by the highways team in due course, alongside improvements to Milford Street/Cambrian Terrace and the mini roundabout junction.
“Studies are ongoing to connect the primary school at Frances Lane to Frances Road, Coppet Hall and Wisemans Bridge.
“Further upgrade works between Valley Road and the village centre along Brooklands Place are to be programmed to complete the active travel connection to Saundersfoot Railway Station,” he added.
On May 15, 1963, NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper launched on the sixth and final crewed flight of the Mercury Program.

This was also the last time a NASA astronaut launched on a solo mission to space. Cooper lifted off from Cape Canaveral on an Atlas rocket booster. He rode inside a capsule called Faith 7, which he piloted for 22 orbits around the Earth. The entire mission lasted 34 hours and 20 minutes and was the longest flight of the Mercury program. Cooper performed 11 experiments in orbit. One of them involved deploying a flashing ball in space and tracking it. Cooper also became the first person to sleep in space. When it came time to head home, Faith 7 started having some problems. It started giving faulty readings, and NASA decided that the auto-pilot system could not longer be trusted. So, Cooper had to pilot it manually. This made him the first astronaut manually fly a space capsule for the entire reentry process. Not only was his landing smooth, but it was also the most accurate landing in the history of the Mercury program. He splashed down just 4 miles away from the recovery ship that was waiting for him in the Pacific Ocean.

On May 9, 2003, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched the first-ever asteroid sample return mission, Hayabusa.

This was also the first mission to land on an asteroid. Hayabusa would spend about two years chasing down a near-Earth asteroid called 25143 Itokawa. It then landed on the asteroid, scooped up some samples, and returned to Earth in 2010. Hayabusa may have accomplished its mission, but it was also constantly plagued with technical difficulties. The problems started six months after the launch, when a huge solar flare damaged the solar arrays. This reduced the amount of power the solar panels could supply to its ion engines, so it look an extra three months to reach the asteroid. After finally getting there, Hayabusa tried to drop off a tiny robotic lander called MINERVA, but it drifted off into space without even touching the asteroid. Hayabusa itself made two separate landing attempts, both of which were riddled with problems that put the spacecraft into safe mode. But somehow it still managed to bring some asteroid dust back to Earth.

On May 13, 1964, NASA launched the second abort test of the Apollo spacecraft.

This uncrewed mission would demonstrate that the launch escape system could safely eject the Apollo command module in case of an emergency. For the first test, the command module ejected just above the launchpad 15 seconds after liftoff. But the second time it stayed on top of the rocket for 44 seconds. It reached an altitude of almost 30,000 feet, which was six times higher than it went during the first test. By doing the test later in the flight, NASA was checking to see if the escape system worked well under high dynamic pressure. In other words, the rocket was under more mechanical stress because of the aerodynamics of its flight. It lifted off on a Little Joe II rocket from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and the abort test went mostly according to plan. The Command Module did bump in to the booster after they separated, and that damaged one of its parachutes. Thankfully it had two more parachutes, but the landing was still pretty rough.

As Taiwan’s representation at the Venice Art Biennale 2024, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum presents the exhibition “Everyday War” by the artist Yuan Goang-Ming. Curated by Abby Chen, Yuan’s project merges video art with a domestic ambiance, reflecting on contemporary life’s challenges and hidden threats. The centerpiece, the exhibition’s eponymous work “Everyday War,” depicts a domestic space transforming amid warplanes, symbolizing the evolving nature of conflict.

Yuan Goang-Ming’s work blurs the line between video art and film, exploring themes like “home” and “uncanny futures”. The artist grew up in Taiwan and studied media art in Germany. In the 1990s he established himself as one of Taiwan’s leading new-media artists. The exhibition at the Palazzo delle Prigioni around the corner of Piazza San Marco features Yuan’s works “Everyday Maneuver”, “The 561st Hour of Occupation”, “What lies Beyond Us?”, “Dwelling”, “Everyday War”, “Prophecy”, and “Flat World”. The show runs until November 24, 2024.

This video provides you with an exhibition walkthrough and interviews with artist Yuan Goang-Ming and curator Abby Chen.

Yuan Goang-Ming: Everyday War.
