On April 29, 1985, the European Space Agency's Spacelab launched on the space shuttle Challenger on mission STS-51B. <br/><br/>This was the second time the Spacelab went to space and the first time it flew in a fully operational configuration. Spacelab pallets had flown to space on three previous shuttle missions, but this was the first time that the entire laboratory was used to conduct research in microgravity. Spacelab provided a platform for five fields of research: astronomy, atmospheric physics, materials science, life science and fluid dynamics. The lab was shaped like a cylinder and measured about 23 feet long, or about the length of a short school bus. The pressurized module was housed in the shuttle's cargo bay. Seven astronauts, two monkeys and 24 rodents launched with Spacelab during STS-51B. After spending a week doing research in space, they landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base.

_80-year-old-found-rare-d-day-paradummy-and-mistook-it-for-a-scarecrow.webp "An 80-year-old donated a rare original parachute dummy from D-Day to a museum - after mistaking it for a scarecrow.<br/><br/>Robert Bowley was clearing out his late brother's home when he came across the dummy.<br/><br/>His brother Michael Bowley had been fond of French collectors items and got it while on a trip to Normandy in the 1950s or 1960s.<br/><br/>Robert said he had initially mistaken it for a scarecrow before he passed it along to a museum.<br/><br/>That's when he discovered it was in fact a rare surviving D-Day artefact worth thousands.<br/><br/>The 'scarecrow' was one of several hundred from Operation Bodyguard, part of Operation Overlord, on June 6 1944.<br/><br/>Paradummies, made of hessian cloth, straw and sawdust, were dropped to create fake invasions by allied forces to divert enemy attention from the Normandy landing beaches.<br/><br/>Most of the dummies had a self-destroying mechanism to destroy the evidence - making this surviving dummy rare and valuable.<br/><br/>The paradummy is thought to be worth around £10,000 and one of less than 30 still in existence.<br/><br/>It is now on permanent display in the D-Day exhibition at House on the Hill Toy Museum.<br/><br/>Robert, a retired watchmaker and antique collector from Braintree, Essex, said: \")

The three-wheeled microcar was originally made from 1962 to 1965 by the Peel Engineering Company and was listed in the 2010 Guinness World Records as the smallest production car ever made, with a weight of just 59 kilograms. Of the 50 P50s ever produced, only 27 are still known to exist today. Canadian, Greg, is one of the owners of these rare cars, and he told Future Studios Cars: “The P50 came out of the Isle of Man, basically the concept was a little car that you can use in the city”. With its DKW 49cc engine, the P50 has a top speed of 37mph and 4.2 horsepower. “It’s a one-seater with one headlight - I also love how it has three wheels, the back wheel is the one that is driving it with a chain from a little moped engine,” Greg said. With its uniquely small size, the P50 is not the most practical car to use. “There’s no reverse because you have to get out of the car and go around to the reversing handle, pick up the car and turn it around then get back in,” explained Greg. Although this is undoubtedly a small car, it has a big history. Greg said: “There was a Russian freighter that came into the port of Vancouver, they used it to drive around their huge freighter on the deck but then the refrigerator broke so when they came back, they traded this car in on a refrigerator”. Today, these cars are incredibly difficult to come by and are incredibly expensive - in 2016, a P50 was sold at auction for over $176,000.")
