Yorkshire Air Museum marks eighty years since two squadrons of French personnel took over the running of the heavy bomber base, in the run-up to D-Day.<br/>Elvington was the only RAF base staffed entirely by foreign personnel and became know as ‘la petite France’.<br/>With weeks of the flag-raising the French crews would be in action, flying Halifax bombers to strike a German gun battery at Grandcamp Maisy in Normandy on the very eve of D-Day.<br/>Today saw a flag raising ceremony similar to the one held 80 years ago.

Starting training at RAF Tangmere, the then Prince of Wales went on to fly his first solo flight at RAF Bassingbourn on January 14, 1969, followed by the award of his Private Pilots Licence in March 1969 and his RAF Preliminary Flying Badge on 2nd August.")
